| Going to
the Sun Road |
This is
probably the most incredible road I have taken
through any National Park. It bisects the park
running 50 miles from the entrance at St. Mary's to
the West Glacier entrance and at times is bordered
by steep cliffs looking into valleys and by the edge
of mountains at Logan's pass as it follows the
cliffs of the Continental Divide. It also follows
the shores of St. Mary Lake and and Lake McDonald.
There are many scenic pull-offs including picnic
spots and by the lakes. Many good hikes originate
from this road. Try to be on the road before 7 am
because it gets very crowded during high season.
Because of the long hours of the day in summer, this
road gives great scenery in varying light that
highlights parts previously unnoticed. |
| Many
Glacier Road |
Many
Glacier Road is reached from outside the east side
of Glacier and originates from the town of Babb. It
passes glaciers clinging to the side of mountains
and Lake Sherburne, created by dam outside the
park. The end of the road is the trailhead for
Glacier's most scenic hikes. Every time I have
taken this road I have seen bear and bighorn sheep
in the small fields at the side of the road and in
the cliffs at its end. |
| Two
Medicine Road |
This
drive passes some of Glaciers mountain scenery and
ends at Two Medicine Lake which is surrounded by
peaks. Take the ferry across the lake or take one
of the many trails at the end of the road.
Twenty-five miles south on Montana 2 is the Walton
Goat Lick where mountain goats gather at a natural
salt lick. |
| Kings
Hill National Scenic Byway (US 89) |
This
drive passes through the Lewis & Clark National
Forest and the Little Belt Mountains. The drive
offers mountain scenery, heavy forest and rolling
hills. colors were There are ghost towns at
Hughesville and Castle Town, a former mining town.
